  • “I don’t know what to do!” This is one of the most frequently heard comments by family members with a loved one in addiction. Too often family members resort to yelling, judging, shaming and ultimatums. For many therapists, counselors, peers and friends, their only advice is Al-anon. Yet Al-anon is not designed to teach active tools to family members that can motivate change in the substance user. In this workshop we will explore the benefits of the Invitation to Change model, an approach based on evidenced-based therapies, combined with kindness and emphasis on self-care. We will learn about a novel way to understand addiction, learn specific tools to use with a loved one as well several skills for self-care. There has never been a more important time to reshape how we engage family members in addiction.

Learning Objective 1: Identify the 3 P’s of the Invitation to Change approach
Learning Objective 2: Identify 3 differences between Al-anon and ITC
Learning Objective 3: Explain how to use the SURF technique
Learning Objective 4: Identify 3 self-care skills for family members in addiction
