An addiction is the habitual drive to continue an action even to the detriment of health and happiness. The majority of individuals with chemical and behavioral addictions are also experiencing issues of mental health.  This presentation will examine the role and relationship that mental health has with the addictive brain.  This presentation will focus on several destructive behavioral addictions: sex, gambling, shopping, and the Internet. The CUBIS Model of Addiction will be discussed along with case studies.  Attention will also be given to the power of the Internet in contributing to these co-occurring disorders. Participants will become more familiar with the research regarding the addictive brain and the relationship it has with co-occurring disorders. Participants will learn the similarities and differences between Behavioral and Chemical Addictions and the implications it has upon treatment strategies for individuals with co-occurring disorders. Participants will learn about the CUBIS Model of Addiction and the relationship that mental health and addiction have with one another, as well as the Power of the Internet.
