    This lecture will cover the neurobiology of heroin/opioid addiction including: the reward pathway of addiction, the definitions of tolerance and dependence, medication assisted treatment of heroin addiction and evidence based practice. Participants will be able to identify brain structure and mechanisms in the brain that contribute to opiate reactivity; define key concepts of tolerance and dependence; list key medicines used to treat opiate addiction and their preferred administration schedules for the most successful outcomes; and describe how MAT and therapy within a case managed system produces successful recovery.
